Choosing the Right Maternity / Nursing Bra for You
Our breasts undergo numerous changes during and after pregnancy. They are enlarging and becoming heavier and more sensitive. So, it is important to get a proper support bra to help us feel more comfortable during our late pregnancy and after delivery.
You may want to keep these considerations in mind when buying a maternity/nursing bra:
- Select a bra with convenient, easy access to the breast, i.e. drop cup type (make sure it's one-hand cup opening) or pull up type (which is like a casual bra and to feed, just pull the cups up or down). This is very helpful, especially when we're holding our baby.
- Shop for a maternity/nursing bra during the final weeks of pregnancy, because our breasts are continually changing as we near our due date. Doing so will ensure that we select one that will fit adequately after delivery.
- Avoid buying a bra that leaves too much room for future growth; it will not give you proper support now. You may have to choose a bra that fits well now, knowing that you may need to change to another size later on.
For example: A Cup A person, can become a Cup B person at the end of her pregnancy, and then becomes a Cup C person after her milk comes in (after delivery). Then, after breastfeeding for a few months, she may find herself going back to Cup B again, and she might remain a Cup B even after weaning her baby, or she could further reduce back to a Cup A after a long period of breastfeeding. So it's very difficult to tell and therefore it's also not advisable to get many bras of the same size at one go.
How to Determine Your Bra Size
It is important to note that bra styles and differing fabrics contribute to size differences. To determine your band size and cup size, you'll need to take two measurements while wearing a good fitting, unpadded bra. Take out your measuring tape and follow the following simple steps. Remember to stand up straight and breathe normally.
- For the band size, measure around the body, just under the arms. If the measurement is an uneven number, round up to the next even number.
- To determine your cup size, measure around at the fullest part of the bust across the nipples
- Subtract the band measurement from the bust measurement. The difference will determine your cup size. (As shown in the chart)
Example
Band Size
35 + 1 = 36 (Add 1" if your underarm measurement is an uneven number)
Cup Size
38 - 36 = 2 (Fullest bust measurement subtract band size)

How to know if your Bra Fits properly
- A proper fit covers the entire breast - no breast tissue can "spill" out.
- A proper fit is snug around the bottom band. It should be comfortable while not putting any pressure on the breasts. A bra that fits too tightly may cause plugged ducts or mastitis.
- A proper fit should not ride up in the back.
- A proper fit should have straps that keep the breasts elevated without cutting into your shoulder.
NOTE: Consider an under wire bra only if you are used to wearing one and feel most comfortable wearing one while breastfeeding. With under wire maternity/nursing bras, it is utmost important to obtain a proper fit, so the wire does not put any pressure on the sensitive breast tissues. |
